Flooring Installation Timeline: What to Expect

Planning a flooring project? Understanding the timeline helps you prepare your home, plan your schedule, and manage expectations. Here's what professional installation takes by material type.

“How long will my flooring project take?” is one of the most common questions we hear. The answer depends on material type, home size, subfloor condition, and whether prep work is needed. Here's a realistic breakdown based on 15+ years of DFW flooring installations.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Installation Timeline

LVP is the fastest flooring to install because it doesn't require complex prep or lengthy acclimation periods.

Typical timeline for 2,000 sq ft whole-home installation:

  • Day 1: Site inspection, furniture removal, subfloor testing and prep. If moisture barriers are needed, installation begins.
  • Days 2-3: Acclimation (LVP boxes sit in rooms for 24-48 hours at room temperature). Precise layout and cutting. Plank installation.
  • Day 4: Finishing — baseboards, door trim, cleanup. Final inspection.
  • Total: 4-5 days for typical installation without significant subfloor prep.

If subfloor prep is needed: Add 1-3 days for leveling, repair, or moisture barrier application.

Porcelain Tile Installation Timeline

Tile takes longer due to layout considerations, cutting requirements, and grout curing times.

Bathroom tile (150 sq ft) timeline:

  • Days 1-2: Subfloor inspection and prep. Waterproofing membrane application in wet areas. Layout and cutting. Mortar application and tile setting.
  • Day 3: Grouting and initial cleanup. Grout must cure for 48-72 hours before regular use.
  • Days 4-5: Grout curing. Sealing (if cement grout used).
  • Total: 5-7 days including curing time.

Large tile projects (kitchen, living areas): 7-14 days depending on size, complexity of layout, and material type.

Hardwood Installation Timeline

Hardwood requires the longest timeline due to acclimation, finishing, and moisture management requirements.

Typical timeline for 1,500 sq ft engineered hardwood:

  • Week 1: Subfloor inspection. Moisture testing. Hardwood boxes delivered and acclimated in rooms (typically 2-3 weeks minimum, sometimes longer). Moisture barriers installed if on slab.
  • Week 2-3: Acclimation continues. Installation begins as soon as moisture and temperature stabilize.
  • Week 3-4: Installation (3-5 days). Finishing — baseboards, trim, stain/poly if unfinished hardwood. Final inspection.
  • Total: 3-4 weeks minimum due to acclimation requirements. Can be longer if moisture issues are found.

Carpet Installation Timeline

Carpet installation is quick, but acclimation and padding prep add some time.

Typical timeline for whole-home carpet:

  • Day 1: Subfloor inspection, carpet delivered and acclimated (24+ hours at room temperature).
  • Day 2: Padding installation, carpet cutting and seaming (if multiple rolls needed), stretch and secure.
  • Day 3: Baseboards and trim. Cleanup.
  • Total: 3-4 days for whole-home carpet installation.

Laminate Installation Timeline

Laminate installation is similar to LVP but may require additional moisture barrier prep on slab foundations.

Typical timeline: 3-5 days for whole-home installation, depending on subfloor prep requirements and layout complexity.

Multi-Room Projects: The Mobilization Factor

When installing flooring in multiple rooms, scheduling matters:

Installing all rooms simultaneously (recommended): Crews mobilize once, sequence work efficiently, complete project faster overall. Most cost-effective approach.

Staggering installation across weeks: Each room gets its own mobilization event (moving equipment, setup, cleanup). Slower overall, higher cost per square foot, extends project duration unnecessarily.

Subfloor Issues: The Timeline Wild Card

The biggest timeline variable is subfloor condition. Issues discovered during inspection can add significant time:

  • Moisture problems: Require moisture barriers, drying periods, or subfloor replacement (add 2-5 days).
  • Uneven subfloor: Leveling concrete with self-leveler or removing/replacing wood can add 2-4 days.
  • Rotten or damaged wood: Subfloor replacement (add 3-7 days).
  • Plumbing/electrical work: Rerouting lines adds 1-3 days minimum.

Professional subfloor inspection before quoting installation prevents timeline surprises later.

Preparation: What You Can Do Before Installation

Speed up your project by preparing before crews arrive:

  • Remove furniture and personal items: Saves 1+ hours per day of crew time.
  • Move vehicles from driveway: Ensures unobstructed equipment access.
  • Protect adjacent areas: Tape doorways to contain dust.
  • Have utilities accessible: Crews need power and water access.
  • Plan for pets: Arrange boarding or containment during installation days.

Plan Ahead: Factors That Delay Projects

Some delays are unavoidable but worth planning for:

  • Material delays: Special orders or color selections can delay availability (add 1-2 weeks).
  • Weather: Heavy rain can delay drying times for moisture barriers.
  • Structural issues: Discovered damage requires contractor consultation and repair planning.
  • Custom work: Intricate patterns, borders, or specialty installations add time.

The Bottom Line

Plan for 4-7 days for most whole-home flooring projects, longer for hardwood due to acclimation. Allow extra time for subfloor prep if your home is older or has moisture concerns. Work with your contractor to understand the specific timeline for your project type and home condition.
